Hopi Whorl Braids

The Hopi are Native American peoples from the Southwest. Hopi girls wear their hair in a traditional squash-blossom hairstyle to signify their maturity, fertility and readiness for marriage. After they married, women wear a single braid down the back. Elaborate Hopi whorl patterns have become the source of inspiration for jewelry and decorative design and even fashion – for example the iconic hairstyle of the Star Wars character of Princess Leia is arguably one of the most recognizable features of a female film star of the 20th century.
