Byzantine Pearl Earring
Earrings of this type—with circular hoop and either three or four pendant chains of various types set with pearls, glass, or gold beads—have been found among a number of hordes of jewelry dating from the 6th and 7th centuries. The relatively large number of extant examples suggests such earrings were popular for nearly two centuries. Similar earrings have also been identified in two treasures of exceptional quality and importance: the Second Cyprus Treasure, which also contained 7th century gold medallions and silver plate of imperial manufacture, and the late sixth-century Assiut Treasure from Egypt, which may have been the property of a member of the imperial family.
