Peruvian Gold
The ancient peoples of what would later become Peru viewed gold as a substance imbued with spiritual and symbolic meaning. The Incas thought of gold as the ‘sweat’ of the sun, a major deity. This piece was inspired by the Moche peoples who flourished on the northern coast of Peru near present-day Moche, from about 100 to 700 AD. The most fashionable ornaments were those with wide circular frontals, often with a border of hollow spheres.
