Empress Sofya

Sofya Paleologue, the daughter of the last Byzantine Emperor, was the wife of the Russian Tsar Ivan III. She became renowned for her diligence and determination in trying to preserve the legacy of the Byzantine Empire after its fall. Even decades after being in Moscow, she referred to herself as the Tsarina of Constantinople. She played a significant role in liberating Russia from the Mongol yoke: she went against the boyars' wishes and persuaded Ivan III to confront the Horde militarily rather than paying them off.
